About Dunewood
Temporary copy
In 1855, David Sammis purchased 120 acres on Fire Island and built the Surf Hotel, a three-story structure with guest cottages that prospered for decades. In 1908, the facility was designated Fire Island State Park, Long Island’s first state park. It was the only seashore park until Jones Beach opened in 1929. In 1953, Murray Barbash had his vision and founded Dunewood, transforming naked land into what is today’s fun family community. As a “no shares allowed” community, Dunewood residents do in fact form a true community.
